About Alpacas
Alpacas: From Andean Peaks to American Hearts
Native to the majestic Andes Mountains of South America, alpacas were first introduced to the United States in 1984—and they’ve been winning hearts ever since. Today, these gentle creatures are adored by animal lovers across the country for their endearing personalities and extraordinary fleece.
Having evolved in the high-altitude, chilly climates of the Andes, alpacas produce a uniquely warm, soft, and luxurious fiber that’s a joy to wear. Their fleece is not only incredibly comfortable but also sustainable—growing back each year like nature’s gift.
Each alpaca is sheared annually, yielding 4 to 6 pounds of one of the world’s finest natural fibers. Softer than silk, warmer and lighter than wool, and impressively strong, alpaca fiber comes in 22 natural shades—more than any other fiber-producing animal. Once reserved for Incan royalty, this exquisite fleece is now cherished by spinners, weavers, and fashion enthusiasts around the globe.

“Thanks to their gentle temperament and surprisingly easy care, alpacas have drawn in enthusiasts from all walks of life—turning curious newcomers into passionate owners and breeders.”

Alpacas: Gentle Companions with Remarkable Benefits
Alpacas are not only charming and easy to care for—they’re also impressively efficient creatures. Their three-chambered stomachs allow for highly effective digestion, and their manure is a gardener’s dream: free of viable seeds and ready to enrich pastures or ornamental landscapes without the need for composting.
With only lower front teeth, alpacas graze without uprooting grass, making them gentle on the land. Standing about 36 inches tall at the withers and weighing between 100 and 200 pounds, adult alpacas are calm, manageable, and well-suited to small acreage—typically 5 to 10 animals per acre.
The joy, simplicity, and potential profitability of raising alpacas have drawn people from all walks of life into the fold. Some are captivated by the luxurious fiber, others pursue alpaca farming as a business venture, and many simply enjoy the peaceful companionship these animals offer. Whatever the motivation, one thing is certain: life with alpacas is endlessly rewarding.
